Favorite Beauty Products from 2016

Today I wanted to share my favorite beauty products from 2016. Unlike monthly favorites, I wanted to review the products that overall were the best from my routine throughout the year. With the wedding on my brain all last year, I wanted to amp up my beauty routine in some areas, but also stick with what I know works to avoid potential unwanted reactions from my sensitive skin. These are the products I've used and loved throughout 2016.
favorite products 2016, best buys of 2016, best in beauty 2016

BEST BEAUTY PRODUCTS FROM 2016:

IT Cosmetics CC Cream: This has been repurchased multiple times throughout the year, and my mom and aunts have also jumped on the bandwagon with me this year. It was actually featured in my everyday makeup routine filed in 2015, so it's basically my ride-or-die foundation. I use it during the week for work and on the weekend when I'm running out for errands (aka shopping). I prefer the original formula to the illumination version. I love that it includes SPF 50, but I do question if you need to use more than I do for the full protective benefits. I use probably half a pump for my face and even that can seem like more than enough!  I recommend setting it with a powder, and recently I've been setting it with a little bit of Bare Minerals original powder.

Dermablend Foundation: This is the foundation my makeup artist used on me for my wedding. It gives awesome coverage but still gives a natural finish (aka no cake face). I previously swore by Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation for blog photos, but this one works better for my neutral / dryer skin and looks better on me in person as well.

Loreal Voluminous Lash Primer: I've never taken the time to wear a lash primer until I started using Neulash and actually found one that worked enough to add an extra step into my daily routine. This one is affordable, and I prefer it to the Dior and Tarte versions I've used in the past.

Dior Overcurl Mascara: My mom and I have both loved this mascara this year. I've always purchased drugstore mascaras, but again since buying Neulash for my wedding I upped my lash game in more ways than one. I think the serum also helps, but my straight lashes look way longer with a product that can keep it curled. This one does that and has a good ratio of volume to lengthening. If you're on the market for a drugstore mascara, Maybelline is my go-to line.

Urban Decay Concealer: This has somehow lasted me over a year, and I don't own another under eye concealer so it's not like I haven't used it all year! The consistency is very light-weight, which I like because no one wants to look older by creasing under eye concealer. I just re-purchased it just in case mine runs out on me, but I'm tempted to try this one that I've heard good things about.  I love to set mine with the light shade in the Kat Von D palette.

Kat Von D Contour and Highlight Palette: I don't use this every day... but when I do I look 5 lbs skinnier.  Ok jokes aside, I use this for date nights, blog photos, and special occasions to contour my face and set my concealer. You can see me use it in my Everyday Makeup Routine video.

Buxom Lip Gloss: Another mention from previous years, but if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? I've learned that I prefer lipgloss to lipsticks day to day because my lips just look healthier with it. A few colors I love are White Russian, Katie, and Hot Mama. I primarily wear lipsticks for blog photos because I need the extra color because I love my exposure ;)

Urban Decay Setting Spray: With starting work this year I was interested in a product to help make my makeup last during those 9-5's. I've used this in the past and my makeup artist used this on us at the wedding as well. Since I can get dry skin, I also like taking away the powder look after you set you makeup. This works for me much better than the MAC Fix+ I've used in the past, and the big bottle will last forever.

Real Techniques Brush: Thanks to a crazy MAC obsession when I first discovered Youtube in college, I own mostly Mac Cosmetics brushes. However, if I could get a repeat I would save a bit of money and get more of these instead! I do still reach for my Mac eyeshadow brushes, but as far as the face brushes are concerned this one is my go-to for bronzer, powder, and blush. It doesn't shed, cleans up really well, and the size makes blending a breeze.

BEST SKINCARE FROM 2016

Tula Face Cleanser: I've used this cleanser every day since March and my skin has really balanced out. My resolution last year was to get an actual skincare routine down (no more makeup wipes!) to get my skin in good shape for the wedding. I've talked about my it on the blog before, but I had a hormonal breakout challenge to overcome after my pill switched to generic. It takes off eye makeup really well and I always use it to clean my beauty blender when it needs it. You can get 20% off your first purchase at Tula through this link.

Loving Tan Express Tan: This isn't in the widget but is worth a mention. Other than the inconvenience of only being available online (and a few cents of foreign credit charges may apply, FYI!) this has been my favorite self-tanner of the year. I prefer to use a mousse formula, and why bother with an 8-hour formula when you can shower off and be tan in 2?! In comparison to St. Tropez, it lasts longer, is slightly cheaper, and gives a deeper color payoff (even in the medium shade I use). I always google for a coupon code to get a free mitt when I purchase.

Coola Sunscreen: I've always hated the hairspray feeling most aerosol sprays leave me with and switched to lotion because of it. I've been good about wearing sunscreen under my makeup, but I really slack when it comes to other parts on my body (especially on my hands and arms).  I purchased this organic sunscreen before going to Hawaii on our honeymoon. It smells like a pina colada and makes your skin feel moisturized but not greasy. This product has helped me wear sunscreen on my on a daily basis because of that! They also have an unscented version that I will buy for work in the future.

BEST HAIR PRODUCTS OF 2016

T3 Whirl Trio: I purchased this during 2015's Black Friday sale and eventually bought an additional clip barrel that I've used on a daily basis since. I prefer to have brushed out curls vs my flat straight hair, and this has helped limit the damage caused by daily heat. Read my T3 Whirl Review here and see the three looks I get when using it.

Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo: Out of the handful I've tried in years past this has definitely been my favorite. I have pretty soft/ silky/ fine hair and I can't stand the powdery feeling a lot of dry shampoos can cause. This one is light-weight and a little goes a long way, plus it comes in a darker version for my dark haired friends! I think I've repurchased 3 times this year.

Fromm Hair Brush: I was sent a few of these brushes and I honestly can't even remember what I used before them. This brush is gentle on my fine hair and I use it to brush out my curls. I also use the round brush when I blow dry my hair, and the handle is much easier to work with than the larger rubber round brush I used before (plus, it's rose gold <3)

Long post, but I hope you found it helpful! Maybe your New Years resolution is to wear more sunscreen, take better care of your skin, or try new products instead of sticking with the same routine. Do you use any of these or have a recommendation? Let me know in the comments if there's a product you think I should try!

Best Birthday Freebies

fashion birthday freebies, beauty birthday freebies, free birthday perks

Happy birthday to...me! I wanted to share with you the best birthday freebies and promos that I totally plan to take advantage on this month! I usually do a google search around this time of year to find any new birthday freebies, but the lists I find always include a ton of food deals and not enough fashion and beauty perks that I take advantage of every year.  The perks of having an inbox full of company emails throughout the year is that during your birthday month you usually get a bonus email to include additional coupon codes or better yet a freebie. If you're really committed, you could create a junk gmail account to sign up for as much as possible and check it during your birthday month or for when you want coupons 😜

These are my favorite birthday freebies I take advantage of every year:

Tory Burch:  Every year I receive a $50 credit towards anything in the Tory Store (no exclusions as far as I know and NO MINIMUM!). A few things I've used it on in the past include this cedar wood candle that I ended up spending under $20 and still keep it as decor in my home. Two years ago I bought these Miller flats that I wear all spring and summer long. A few years back I used it on these stud earrings (again, under $20 on my dime) for these earrings that I still wear on regular rotation in my wardrobe today. This year, I'm looking at these Minnie flats for work, but I'll let y'all know what I decide. The good and bad about a post holiday birthday is the holiday sales (right now it's an additional 30% off), however the inventory is also much lower until they stock up for spring. Please note, I read you have to be signed up for a month prior to your birthday to receive the promotion.

** UPDATE: I received my promotion from TB late, and they've changed it to a $100 minimum purchase and there are a few exclusions to look at. The cute Minnie flats are unfortunately excluded!

Kendra Scott: 50% off one item (no exclusions as far as I know) when you show them your valid drivers lisence during the month of your birthday. Last year, I purchased a bracelet that was on sale and I think it cost me $10. It would also be a great time to purchase your bridal jewelry if you've dreamed of wearing her pieces on your big day! I obsessed with any piece with her iridescent druzy stone. Her Elle earrings are a staple in my wardrobe and I've had them for over three years now. This year, I'm thinking about getting these earrnings that I've been eyeing for a few months!

Sephora: Signing up to be a Sephora Beauty Insider lets you track points towards samples and you get a free sample set during your birth month. Also, you typically get emails including a coupon usually in April and November which increases based on how much you spend in a calendar year.  I always get the first look at the new Sephora freebie gift. In comparison to years past, they now give you a two options to choose from. This year you can choose between a Tarte blush and lip mini or a Caudalie moisturizer and serum set. I choose the skincare set because I don't need another Tarte blush and the lip color was too dark for me.

Starbucks: Free drink when you have the Starbucks app on your birthday (I believe it's a three day window), so why not make it a venti :) You also get 15% off your purchase in their store. Hello cute new coffee mug!

Sugarfina: You'll get a coupon for a free cube by signing up for their emails! I recently purchased this cute box in honor of NYE and my birthday because #treatyoself

Additional fashion and beauty birthday freebies:

American Eagle Outfitters: 15% off when you sign up to be a AEReward member

Anthropologie: 15% off your purchase (it used to be 20%, sigh)

Aveda: Free gift when you sign up as a member

Baskin Robbins: Free ice cream when you sign up for a baskin robbins account

DSW: $5 gift certificate when you sign up for their rewards program

Reflecting on 2016 and Goals in 2017

2016 was definitely good to me. I grew up, graduated with my doctorate, passed my board exam, started my career, moved out of my parents' house, got married, honeymooned in Hawaii, and started life with Tim. I wasn't as active on my blog this year as I would have liked so I wanted to share all the highlights from my year.

makeup routine, beauty routine, it cosmetics cc cream
I filmed my first Youtube video on my everyday makeup routine. Although it's definitely still out of my comfort zone to be on film I plan to expand my blog to that platform this year. Tim has been so supportive, and we want to start documenting more of our life together on film. I would love to have you subscribe!

We decided to do our photos DIY style while in Savannah for my graduation. We took them in front of our favorite date night spot in the city, Vic's on the River. My mom shot these photos for us and it was her first time using my blogger camera - go Mom!  See the full post here.

Armstrong state university, graduation, PT School
In May I finished up my 7 years of college with my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Armstrong State University.  It was the most challenging but best three years of my life. I started dating Tim the week before my interview, so I knew we would have to be long distance in a very fresh relationship (although I knew we were going to get married from day one, weird I know!). I met the most amazing friends, got engaged, started this blog, and learned so much about myself.  Of course, those three years also had some major challenges: I lost my grandma and grandpa and our family dog Laila. I had thumb surgery thanks to flag football. And of course a lot of school stress came along with it.
I passed the Physical Therapy boards in July and it was definitely my biggest accomplishment. Of course, graduating was also a huge accomplishment, but it didn't mean anything without passing this test. I was convinced I failed and waiting a week or two for those results was the longest and most blah few days of my year. My boss was actually the first person to tell me when my license was posted (she was more excited than I to start work ;)

bridal shower ideas, pineapple party, Hawaii party
My Hawaiian bridal shower in August was hosted by three of my bridesmaids and it was the first official wedding event for us so it was super special! I plan to round it up for you guys on Wednesday because... better late than never, right :)

In September Tim and I found the perfect little townhouse for us to start our newlywed life together in. I moved out of my parents house the day after we got the keys and I remember my first night in the house I cried because it all hit me that I would never live at my parents home again. I know, I'm 27 and it's time to grow up, but it was a really weird feeling. I lived there alone for the first month and a half alone until Tim and I got married.

I celebrated my bachelorette party in Savannah GA with these fine young ladies. I'm pretty sure we had the sweetest loft on Broughton street with exposed brick and banana leaf pillows for decor. I plan to round up this weekend with a few more photos on a later date :)

I planned to post this picture the night of the rehearsal dinner, but Tim was so adamant about not having any hints of my dress that he didn't want me to post it, haha. I actually waiting until the rehearsal dinner for my hair and makeup trial which most people couldn't believe, but I'll go into that in a future post!

Of course, my favorite day of the year was 10/14/16. See our wedding pictures and video in this post.

Our honeymoon in Hawaii will probably never be topped (but cheers to trying in 2017 ;)  We swam with sea turtles, saw Pearl Harbor, wined and dined, got sick on a helicopter, ate the famous hula pie, walked along the beautiful beaches, and completely soaked up our first week as Mr. and Mrs. We even vlogged, so I'll let you guys know when that hits the internet.  You can read more on our time in Kauaii and Maui if you're interested!

In November, I hit 10k on Instagram which was another huge accomplishment for me this year. It's been fun meeting new friends and posting more intently over there.

2017 GOALS:

Try Whole 30 - It's been on the back of my mind ever since I read about it on Chronicles of Frivolity.

Finish the Bikini Body Guide - I always go back to this workout routine because it's effective, simple, and planned out for me. However, I also quit the consistency around week 5 or 6. This year, I would love to track more of the progress with you, and actually finish it, haha.

Save for a house - Tim and I definitely have started the saving process to buy our first home. Although intimidating, I know it's financially in our best interests and our goal is to buy at the end of 2017 or early 2018.

Switch to Wordpress and re-design my blog - I don't expect to do this until later in the year, but I have been wanting to upgrade my little internet space to look more professional in the future. I've even considered re-branding in general to my name, but we'll see about all that :)

Learn to cook - I'm so lazy when it comes to meals and it actually stresses me out in the kitchen. This year I want and need to learn to cook to have more real meals with Tim.
