Unexpected Fitness

I recently received an email from Meg over at Destiny USA including some great unexpected fitness tips, and I knew I wanted to share them with y'all. I tend to focus on getting fit at the gym, but I need to keep in mind that there are also ways to increase my health with simple lifestyle changes. Here are some of our tips to keep you on track to being a healthier you in 2014 (and beyond).

1. I don't know about you, but I only enjoy drinking water if it's cold. So if you're like me, then you need to prepare ahead of time and keep an insulated bottle around with you. If you don't mind room temperature water, then why wouldn't you just want a cute water bottle? Here's the one I've been carrying around with me (Link!). Drinking cold water helps boost your metabolism, but what really matters is whether or not you're drinking enough. So no matter your temperature preference, drink up!

2. You don't need a stair master to be a stair master. You've probably heard it before, but take the stairs instead of the elevator. And that doesn't mean just chill and ride up the escalators either.. walking up them is a quick resistance workout, and can burn up to 10 calories per minute!

3. I swear that shopping is my cardio- Carrie Bradshaw was ahead of her time ;). I'm already a fast walker as is, but if I didn't go shopping on the weekends, I would just be sitting on the couch reading blogs and looking at Pinterest (follow me here). Just one walking session helps lower blood pressure, increases your mood, and and reduces your risk for type II diabetes (which by the way, it's estimated that 7 million people in the US don't know they have it). I read somewhere that a two hour shopping trip can burn around 300 calories, so put a little extra pep in your step next time you hit the mall.

4. I had no idea Panera Bread had a secret/ power food menu. I thought they already offered healthy options, but if there's even more to choose from, I'm in! The main point that hit me with this tip was to know that you can always customize your orders at restaurants, so whether it's asking for your veggies to exclude butter, or your chicken to contain less salt.. don't be afraid to ask!

5. I'm currently participating in a research study examining the benefits of sitting on an exercise ball. I've drastically noticed a change in my posture (for the better) since sitting on an exercise ball in class, so if you struggle with sitting up straight, try this! As a physical therapy student.. I could probably write you a book about the effects bad posture has on your body (but I won't bore you)…just know you will thank yourself later for correcting your bad posture habits now! So sit up straight and align your ears over your shoulders, practice makes perfect!

6. As a student, I sit in a chair (or ball^) for most of the day, then get home and study at my desk at night. Luckily, my teachers are pretty good about giving brain breaks. With that being said, set your alarm every hour to remind yourself to get up and moving, even if it's just for a couple of minutes. You can even add a resistance exercise (squats, calf raises, push-ups, jumping jacks, crunches.. whatever floats your boat) into the mix before sitting back down.

*In relation to the last two points, here is a good quick read.. LINK!

7. Instead of going on a date to the movies, why not suggest something more active to do together? Go skating, hiking, bowling, play a sport, whatever you two are interested in!

See, that doesn't sound so bad, does it? I hope you can take some of these tips and make small changes everyday to keep you on your health and fitness path. Let me know how you're achieving your fitness goals!

Cheers to a Year

Today marks the 1 Anniversary for Tim and I as a couple. He came into town for the weekend, and it was textbook perfect. Saturday we celebrated at Vic's on the River in downtown Savannah, and we didn't realize how late it was until the place was empty and the staff was cleaning up. It's amazing how time can stop when I'm with him. Over the past year, I've been writing down all the sweet text conversations we have shared, as well as my favorite memories as a way to keep up with our love story. I choose to share it with him this weekend, and it was perfect to relive those memories together. I highly recommend keeping a journal of your relationships in some way!

Sundays are never complete without J Christophers, so of course that was our first stop downtown. After brunch, we walked all over town going in and out of unique boutiques. One of which had macarons, so we both got to try them for the first time! You can see my excitement in the picture below. By the way, he COMPLETELY surprised me with a new MK watch, but the face took up my whole wrist so I need to swap it out for a smaller size when I get back to Atlanta in a few weeks.

Cheers to many many MANY more years together, babe!

HIIT Workout 1/21/14

Here is the workout I (barely) completed today. HIIT workouts have been my favorite type of workouts to do for the past few months, and it's because my body loves them (aka responds to them well & quickly). Well my body doesn't love them while doing them, I should clarify.. haha. Last week I stuck with these types of workouts to get my body adjusted before starting back with weights, so this week I'm throwing in a few lifting days to target specific muscles. I think this is the schedule I wanna stick with for a while!

Warm-up- 1 mile run. I've been doing this as my warm-up to help increase my mile time (I hate running). I've always wanted to be that girl that loves to run (I mean don't we all?!) but it's just not gonna happen.. haha. I absolutely hate it. I thought by doing just a mile per day would be do able… so we'll see how it goes!

10 burpees
8 kb windmills (abs) on each side
10 of this dumbbell complex: reverse fly, row, triceps kickback
15 leg raises
10 bulgarian split squat jumps (each side)
1 min plank
10 pull-ups- with the assisted machine- I'm not that jacked ;)
repeat 2x

If you have any questions about any specific exercises, just ask :)

Happy sweating!

Yummy Energy Balls

My roommate has introduced me to these amazing energy balls and ever since we have all been hooked, aka we make them on the reg. They are packed with healthy nutrients to get you going, plus they definitely hit the spot when bad cravings hit. We make a batch and store them in the freezer to last the week. Here's how (p.s it's super easy)!

1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup honey
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup dark chocolate chips- we maybe use a little more ;)
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 shredded coconut
1/4 cup flax seeds
1 cup almond meal
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Add ingredients into a bowl, stir, and make into balls- waaa la! Store them in the freezer so they keep their shape.

25 Candles

Finally I have time to sit down and write about my birthday. It's been a crazy week because it was my last one at home from Christmas break- lots of packing and school prep. Anyways.. on January 4th I turned 25, WOW! I'm excited to see where this year will lead me. I was fortunate to spend my birthday with the people who mean most to me- family and friends (Tim.. you're in the family category).

FRIDAY was spent celebrating with Tim. We went to pick up my birthday gift... any guesses? It's black and gold and pictured at the end of the post!  We ate at The Capital Grill, which was more than delicious. The mac and cheese listed below is literally on my mind daily now...
He was more than happy to carry my shopping bags around ;)

Here is that lobster mac and cheese I mentioned...yep...drooling!

SATURDAY: As a tradition, I spend the day shopping with my mom. We headed down to Buckhead to shop at Lenox and Phipps Plaza. We grabbed lunch at Twist (you'll discover this is one of my go-to places to eat..). For dinner, we tried something new as a family (and Tim :] ) and did a fondue dinner. It was delicious! We picked up that amazing seafood/ pink/ yummy yummy sauce from Kani house for some added deliciousness. Of course, chocolate fondue followed the meal. I was also surprised with these beautiful flowers from Tim- he's the best.

The following Thursday, I celebrated with the girls.  I got my makeup done at Sephora as a complimentary VIB offer, so the selfie is to show off her work! I ended up going with a lighter lip color for the night out. We went to Twist (see what I was talking about?) then out to dance afterward.

Outfit details: Target tunic (link), glitter belt- forever21, tulle skirt- loft (link), shoes- Tory Burch (link)

Radiant Orchid

Move over Emerald, because the new color of the year is here! Radiant Orchid is a beautiful soft pink- purple color, and I am excited to start incorporating it into my looks ASAP. It's definitely much easier to add into your beauty routine (I mean how wearable is emerald blush and lipstick?). Here are some of my picks.

WARDROBE: This is the most dramatic way to add radiant orchid into your look, because it's definitely the largest pop of color. If you're not scared of a little color, go for it!
   1. I have way too many love tunic tops. This one from Old Navy is as cute as it is affordable. Use    code ONSAVENOW for 15% off Link!

   2. If you're really loving this color and know you'll wear it for years to come, go for a blazer or jacket. I love this one from ASOS (no link available)

ACCESSORIES: This is probably the safest way to add color into your looks (and probably my personal favorite- I LOVE accessories).

   3. It's no secret I love animal print and scarves, so this mix will probably land in my closet soon Link! I'm also loving this similar and less expensive) version from Zara (Link!)

   4. Statement necklaces were all the rage in 2013, and they will still be seen everywhere this year too (because they are awesome). BaubleBar always delivers when it comes to jewelry, and I'm sure as the year goes they will have more choices in this color. Link!

   5. Lately I have been grabbing for my smaller cross body bags way more than my larger ones. They are just so much easier to wear! This one from Tory Burch is a wallet on a chain, so it saves space inside from a bulky wallet. Link!

   6. I've been loving the look of a bright shoe, and this one from ShoeMint is perfect for 2014. If you're a first time user, they always have a coupon code (right now its 40% off your first purchase!). Link!

BEAUTY: It won't be hard to add this gorgeous candy color into your everyday beauty routine. Wear it on your eyes, cheeks, lips, and nails!

   7.  I've been loving these Sephora Formula X nail polishes because I love the look from a gel manicure but I don't like the removal involved. These polishes give you that "bubbly" look, but can easily be removed with regular remover and won't peel your nails. Orchid pink is the perfect work appropriate color to sport on your nails all year.  Link!

8 & 9. I used to buy fun bright lipsticks, but they would just collect dust in my collection (I blame my love for chap stick). Lately, however, I've been wearing brighter colors everyday. Now I feel weird without a little color on my lips! Link!  (9)

   10. Benefit has always been one of everyones' favorite beauty brands (and everyone knows it's largely because of their cute packaging- however the products are great too..). They just launched their new Lollitint, and it's the perfect candy- orchid color to add to your cheeks and/or lips. Link!

Cardio Circuit 1/2/14

After the holidays, my body is in need of a good ole cardio circuit (actually, it's in need of a lot of cardio circuits). I prefer to incorporate strength training and cardio together, because it takes a lot less time and I definitely get the best results from it (and pretty quickly!). Here's what I did today @ the gym.

10 pull-ups
20 step ups (alternating legs or 10x leg)
10 dumbbell rows each side
1 min on the stair master @ fast pace
1 min plank on BOSU ball
repeat 3x

10 squat thrusters with barbell
10 BOSU push-ups
10-15 triceps dips
15 leg raises with booty lift at the top
optional 30 second sprint
repeat 3x

Happy sweating!

Commitment Day and Fitness Faves

Happy New Year everyone! I've been waiting for 2014 to arrive, 14 (along with 4) is my favorite number! Plus I'm that weird person who doesn't like odd numbers, hah. Anyways, I started off my New Year at Commitment Day at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. Joined by my boyfriend and his family, we did a 5k to commit ourselves to a healthy 2014 year!

In relation to committing yourself to a healthier 2014, I decided to put together a few of my fitness favorites.

1. Water Tumbler: I picked this up right before Christmas because it's my current favorite Lilly Pulitzer print. I love elephants and as an Alabama fan I could't pass it up! It really has helped me drink a lot more water because I prefer to drink ice water, and this insulated cup works!

2. Nike Free Shoes: I have always looked to Nike for my next pair of gym shoes. I always love their designs and colors,  which makes it hard for me to choose! After a few months of trying to decide, I found these beauties online and knew they were going to be my next pair... I found mine at finish line. As a side note, definitely size up in this particular style.. as a 7.5 in all my other Nikes, I had to get an 8.5 in these.

3. Lululemon clothing: Basically anything from lululemon is my favorite, and my boyfriend is also a huge fan.You can't really go wrong! I find their fan base is very honest when it comes to their reviews online, so if you want to do a bit of research before you purchase check out their reviews! My favorite  is probably their wunder under tights, because I wear them as my leggings in and out of the gym (I think they're Tim's favorite, too.. haha!)

4. Yurbuds: I lost my Bose headphones a long time ago, and picked up a pair of these from Target not expecting much from them. However, I have to say that I love these because they don't fall out of my ears! I've always had a problem with the Apple headphones, because when I ran they would constantly fall out (so annoying!). These solved the problem.

5. Heart Rate Monitor: Tim spoiled me with a Garmin 250 heart rate monitor at the beginning of 2013, and I don't know how I went so long without one. I love using it at the gym during a workout to help track my rest breaks, peak heart rate, and calories burned. It helps you stay motivated because it shows you just how hard you worked.

6. Foam Roller: I had this same trigger point therapy roller in orange, but Tim surprised me before Christmas with this pink one and I love it even more! These are great for working out tight muscle without the price tag of a spa day.  Not to mention, it is definitely an arm workout when using it.

7. Fitness Barbie: Not pictured above, but definitely deserving of a fitness fave is one of my favorite fitness bloggers, Lauren from Fitness Barbie! If you don't already know her (I would be surprised) she posts daily workouts and great fitness/nutrition tips. Plus she now offers REALLY AFFORDABLE workout and meal plans.  Her philosophy on looking fit over being skinny is exactly how I strive to look! I want to be a fitness barbie like her :) Here's the link to her site-- Link!

Wishing everyone a healthy 2014,
Amanda xo
